Haven’t posted much lately

I’m sorry about that, but I’ve had a hard time finding time to sit at computer, and when I have I’ve concentrated mainly on getting the new skin for my blog ready :) I’m almost there, need a bit more testing first, and some minor tweaks. But I’ll give you a small sneak peak…

Commercial radio - Do they lack of music?

Once again I was struck by the fact that in the 8 hrs I spend at work they play a few songs over and over again. And then I don’t even spend the full 8 hrs in the same area as the radio is.

There’s a few songs that does come back more often the others, but do they really need to play the same music even twice?

In my car going home I gave it a thought, and with as little as 120 songs they could play 8 hrs straight without needing to play anyone twice. 120 songs, that ain’t all that much, I got well over that myself so why can’t they manage to play different songs?

The number 120 was calculated using 4 minutes as an average for a song. 8 hours equals 480 minutes. 480 minutes divided by 4 minutes is 120 songs.

In reality they’d need even less songs, as there’s a few commercials during a one hour period, as well as a newsflash. And of course the radio hosts would use up a few minutes announcing the next song and talking as well. I’d guess that to be able to make 8 hours of radio with all unique songs you’d need somewhere between 80 and 100 songs, depending on length and how much time talking and commercials take up. So why is it that a few songs seem to come up at least once every other hour? Sometimes it seems as there was only a few songs since I last heard it…

Of course if they take requests the risk that they’d be asked to play a song that was played by the hosts previously on air, and in that case I can see a reason as to why, but when they do non-request shows, maybe they could plan it so the same music don’t come back all the time.

The music that come back is always the latest hits… But they do play the songs so often I get bored of them, and hence less inclined to actually go buy it, which I assume is the reason they are played often…

Bad things did come in three after all…

I posted earlier about bad things here.

I learnt yesterday about the third event :( Though this event doesn’t really follow the pattern I still think it is making the saying valid.

I called my fathers mother (I really think life would be easier if the English language had separate names for grandmother to clear if it is a mothers mother or a fathers mother) to ask if she would be home today, as we had done the traditional Christmas baking and I knew she’d want some of the bread.

She then told me that Olle had passed away. It was as she expected me to know that, his obituary notice had been in the paper she said, only one problem with that, I don’t subscribe to a news paper and neither do my sister. He had died on the 13th of august, due to heart failure.

This is clear evidence of the fact we have too little contact with her, but that’s nothing new it has been like that all along. Guess there was a little bit more contact when dad was still alive and me and my sister still lived at home, she’d pop by occasionally then, most of the time to ask for help or to get some coffee when she had a reason to pass by. But never really for the sole purpose of just visiting for a social call. I suppose we did visit her more often then as well, and for a while I lived at her place when I attended school where she lives. But when dad died the contact decreased gradually, for various reasons to be at a mere minimum nowadays. I often think I really should try and keep in touch more often though, but it never really happens.

One would think she could have picked up the phone to tell us that he had died never the less. She does know the number.

Anyway, Olle had been around since me and my sister was really young, kind of being a stand in for grandfather (my biological grandfather died before I was born). He and my grandmother even lived together for a while, but then went separate ways though staying friends, and the last years he’d been keeping my grandmother company more or less all the time, but they did live in separate apartments, as neighbors.

Trying to create my own wordpress theme

As the title says, I’m gonna try to create my own theme for WordPress :) And I almost broke it the first thing… Oh well hopefully I won’t break it anymore then.

I’m not messing with a live blog, I’m experimenting locally, on a test installation of the latest version: 2.7 RC1.

If the theme comes out decent, I might share it with anyone interested.

I do this mainly for two reasons:

  1. I want a new look on this blog but just couldn’t find a theme I like better then the one I have now. There’s a lot very nice themes out there, all just seemed to have something to them that didn’t really appeal to me when I was looking around the other day. Often it was just a very small part of the theme. I could of course have used one of them and just tweaked it, but chose not to.
  2. I figured it would be nice to learn how WordPress is built up. And for sure one way of doing it is messing with it in some way. Themes seem to be a good and rather safe place to start. :)

The only problem with this is that I kind of suck at creating graphics… But I guess I’ll learn that as well, if that is possible :D
